Kalamazoo County, Michigan is a smallish county situated in the south-central part of the state and is home to over a quarter-million people. That's up 18 percent over the same period last year. The number of homes taken back by lenders in 2007 jumped to 969, more than double the total in 2004
For a small county like Kalamazoo every foreclosure hits close to home. Local officials are predicting even more homeowners could be ousted this year, thanks to a state economy that is not expected to get much better and a new round of adjustable-rate hikes are expected that will push monthly payments higher for some mortgage holders.
The typical residence in foreclosure here is the working middle class. They make up the majority of the county's population and are the segment of society most that was targeted by the subprime lenders.
Following the trend that is predominate everywhere else in the country homeowners here are overleveraged as well.
